WORKSHOPS AND ORIENTATION FALL SEMESTER:
The Visual Communication Lab will offer the following workshops over the course of the semester. All DART Students, if interested, may attend any of the workshops listed below.

VC LAB ORIENTATION
Dates:
Friday, 21 Sep, from 1:00pm to 1:30pm
Friday, 28 Sep, from 1:00pm to 1:30pm
Monday, 24 Sep, from 1:30pm to 2:00pm
Monday, 1 Oct, from 1:30pm to 2:00pm

The VC Lab Orientation informs you about its equipment, resources and policies. If you would like to work in the lab and haven’t attended a class orientation or would like to refresh your memory, this orientation is for you.

COPTIC STITCH BINDING
Dates:
Friday, 21 Sep, from 11:00am to 12:30pm,
Monday, 24 Sep, from 11:00am to 12:30pm
Tuesday, 25 Sep from 1:30pm to 3:00pm

In this workshop students will learn how to make a Coptic Stitch Binding. Basic material will be provided: PVA glue, Waxed Binding Thread, Needle, Awl, X-Acto Knife, Metal Ruler, Bone Folder and Cutting Board.
Students should bring special material they wish to experiment with.
What should you bring?
– Text and cover paper you want to experiment with.

JAPANESE BINDING
Dates:
Monday, 1 Oct, from 11:00am to 12:00pm,
Friday, 5 Oct, from 12:30pm to 1:30pm
Thursday, 11 Oct from 6:00pm to 7:00pm

In this workshop students will learn how to make a Japanese Binding. Basic material will be provided: PVA glue, Waxed Binding Thread, Needle, Awl, X-Acto Knife, Metal Ruler, Bone Folder and Cutting Board.
Students should bring special material they wish to experiment with.
What should you bring?

SCREW-POST BINDING
Dates:
Monday, 1 Oct, from 12:30pm to 1:45pm,
Thursday, 4 Oct, from 6:00pm to 7:15pm
Friday, 12 Oct from 11:00am to 12:15pm

In this workshop students will learn how to make a Screw-post Binding. Basic material will be provided: Screw Binding, PVA glue, Awl, X-Acto Knife, Metal Ruler, Bone Folder and Cutting Board.
Students should bring special material they wish to experiment with.

3-HOLE PAMPHLET SEWING
Dates:

In this workshop students will learn how to make a 3-hole pamphlet sewing. Basic material will be provided: Waxed Binding Thread, Needle, Awl, X-Acto Knife, Metal Ruler, Bone Folder and Cutting Board.
Students should bring special material they wish to experiment with.

PERFECT BINDING
Dates:
Tuesday, 25 Sep, from 3:30pm to 5:30pm
Thursday, 27 Sep, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm

In this workshop students will learn how to make Perfect Binding. Basic material will be provided: PVA glue, Glue Brush, X-Acto Knife, Metal Ruler, Bone Folder and Cutting Board.
Students should bring special material they wish to experiment with.

EMBOSSING ON PAPER (different techniques that raises a three-dimensional image on paper)
Dates:
Tuesday, 2 Oct, from 3:00pm to 4:00pm,
Thursday, 11 Oct, from 4:45pm to 5:45pm
Tuesday, 9 Oct from 1:30pm to 2:30pm

In this workshop students will learn how to make Embossing on paper. Basic material will be provided: Light table, Dotting Tools, X-Acto Knife, Metal Ruler, Bone Folder and Cutting Board.

– Paper you want to experiment with.

DIE-CUTS, SHAPES AND PATTERNS

The Visual Communication Lab will be hosting an exciting workshop about the Graphtec Cutter (or electronic cutter). participants will have the opportunity to execute their own unique design.
The Graphtec Cutter can cut patterns and shapes of all sorts into vinyl (whether flock, translucent or glossy) and text and cover paper. Cuts can pierce through (die-cuts) or engrave the surface of the material.
The workshop will be divided in three parts: introduction to the machine, preparation of your Illustrator file and the cutting of your design.
What should you bring?
– A laptop computer
– A vector-based image saved as an Adobe Illustrator file (for text, create outlines)
– Materials for project: vinyl, paper, etc. The machine can cut materials up to 1mm of thickness
